Accra Lions put up another spirited performance to defeat Berekum Chelsea 2-1 in their betPawa Ghana Premier League Matchday 13 fixture played at the Accra Sports Stadium, yesterday.
The result saw the newcomers dethrone Accra Hearts of Oak from the second position on the league table behind Aduana Stars at the top.
The home side, after consistently threatening the goal area of their opponents, took a deserved lead in the 20th minute through Seidu Bassit who slot home from a beautiful delivery from Hagan Frimpong.
Despite pushing for a cushioning immediately after the lead, the host failed to make the right touches to hurt the visitors.
Berekum Chelsea then grew confident in the final minutes of the game and managed to equalise in the 43rd minute with a brilliant goal from Mezack Afriyie who expertly tapped in a cross from Laud Amoah.
Accra Lions made some changes after the break with the introduction of Evans Ampofo in place of Hagan Frimpong while Youssouf Simpara came on for goalscorer Seidu Bassit in the 59th minute.
The introduction of those fresh legs restored the host confidence as they displayed some great football and dominated play especially in midfield.
Their efforts paid off as they restored the lead in the 74th minute through a powerful drive from Abass Samari.
Berekum Chelsea were left very frustrated with hopes of walking away with a point disappearing into thin air.
More devastating for the visitors, was a scary moment in the 85th minute when goalscorer Mezack Afriyie, without any tackle, fell unconscious on the pitch.
It took efforts from medical officials at the stadium to resuscitate the player before rushing him to hospital for further medical attention.
The visitors, however, continued with the onslaught as the piled the pressure on the home side but found it difficult to find their way.
