Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy says the absence of Ghana forward Fatawu Issahaku is massive in the Foxes’ quest to stay in the English top flight.
Leicester regained promotion ahead of the 2024/25 season after winning the 2023/24 Championship under Enzo Maresca.
However, the head coach was coaxed by Chelsea prior to the start of the season, leaving Steve Cooper to take charge of Leicester in their first season back until he was dismissed in November after 12 games.
Issahaku was an integral part of Leicester’s Championship title-winning side, providing 13 assists and scoring six times.
However, after two assists in the ongoing Premier League season, Issahaku’s season was brought to an abrupt end after suffering an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury in November on international duty.
Reflecting on his side’s 10th league defeat at Anfield, van Nistelrooy said: “Of course you need some luck. I think as well that we keep our best players fit. I think with Fatawu out on a cruciate, that was a big blow just a week before I started. It’s a massive loss for this team.”
Leicester City, who have lost three league games on the bounce, now sit in 18th position, a point away from safety, and face defending champions Manchester City on Sunday.
