The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expelled 280 members, including Cynthia Morrison, the incumbent Member of Parliament (MP) for the Agona West Constituency.
The expulsion follows allegations that these members broke party ranks to support Ms Morrison in her bid to contest the 2024 elections as an independent candidate after losing the party’s internal primaries.
In a letter issued by the constituency chairman, Alhaji Gibrine Tanko, the expelled members were informed that they are no longer recognised as members of the NPP. The letter also stated that they are barred from holding any party position, participating in party events, or using the NPP’s symbols and flag.
Ms Morrison’s decision to run as an independent candidate reportedly garnered the support of some constituency executives, polling station executives, and ward coordinators.
The party’s decision underscores its commitment to enforcing discipline within its ranks and addressing acts of defection that could undermine its unity ahead of the December 7 elections.
