The Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana [PPAG] facility in the Central Region has since January 2017, been recording an increase in the number of incomplete abortion cases by students from tertiary institutions in the region.
According to Michael Tagoe, the Project Coordinator at the facility, the situation is dreadful and needs the attention stakeholders in the region.
He explained that their investigations revealed that the reported cases of incomplete abortion was due to the recent use of a ‘fake’ abortion drug on the market.
Mr. Tagoe revealed that the original drug is currently unavailable in the country due to issues the company was facing with the Food and Drugs Authority [FDA], resulting in the importation of the ‘fake’ drug.
According to him, the increased reported cases of incomplete abortions were due to the high demand of abortion drugs in the region.
He explained that the fake drug had no potency; resulting in incomplete abortion when the drug is ingested.
Mr. Tagoe lamented about the status and posture of drugstores in the region who fail to adhere to pharmaceutical measures in the selling of such drugs to the girls.
He stated that though abortion is largely illegal in Ghana, the procedure can be performed at a health facility under the conditions of rape, incest or defilement, when the pregnancy is a threat to the mother and when the fetus is in an abnormal condition.
Speaking in an interview with Ultimate News Central regional Correspondent Kwaku Baah-Acheamfour, he encouraged young people to visit their facilities across the country to receive reproductive and sexual health education and service.
