A woman of several parts, Biochemist, Mentor, Philanthropist, Lecturer, Business woman, Marriage Counsellor, Youth Coach, just name it…
But 60-year old mother of five, Mrs Ruth C. Brenya affectionately called Mama Ruth or Auntie Kiki says “the best profession anyone could ever have in the world is to be a mother.”
She is a Senior Lecturer with the Clinical microbiology department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) School of Medical Sciences specializing in Medical Entomology with considerable research work in malaria.
Aside the uncountable number of people especially students that Mama Ruth has counselled, mentored and paid school fees for, most students in the KNUST will know her for owning and running the Westend Hostel, one of the biggest hostels with a four hundred bed capacity off the campus of the university.
She is also a member of the Soroptimist International an international association of women galvanized to make the world a better place than they met it. She has personally championed projects including the construction of toilet facilities and bore holes as well as community libraries for several communities dotted across Ghana.
“I am a very empathetic person. I sympathise with people a lot. I tried to be very dependable and by nature I am a very hospitable person. I am inspired to make people feel at home and to give off their best,” She describes herself.
Regardless, she still has so much time for family that she confidently says “I have been always there for them. There is not one of my children that I didn’t personally read their university thesis no matter what course they were doing. That is what to me motherhood means. Being there for children no matter what.”
“We do everything together. We go out together; we can stay at the dining table together for launch and by the time we are aware, it is already supper time and we talk about everything. I want to be the bigger sister of my children so they do not hide secrets.”
She comes on board the Mother Supremo contest with a burning passion to raise young ladies with an upright sense of morality.
“Too many people are too casual about morality. I am a Christian and being faithful means a lot to me. I believe marriage vows are sacred. And so I want all the young girls to be morally upright. It’s better than throwing yourself at any man who comes your way. I preach against teenage pregnancy and I am also a marriage Counsellor always counselling the newlyweds to be more respectful to their husbands.
“On 14th May, Mothers Day, I am inviting all my Soroptimist Ladies, members from my church Calvary Charismatic Centre, and my students from the medical school,” she said.
Quite a battalion invited. The premises of Ultimate 106.9 FM is expected to be beaming with joy, excitement, lots of fun, soothing live band music, family oriented contests and the final crowning of the Mother Supremo.
Aside the gifts and the crown, the ultimate winner takes up a social impact project which will be supported by Ultimate 106.9FM.
