The Yendi branch of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has suspended 184 members for several breaches of the party’s constitution. In a letter dated December, addressed to the NPP’s National Chairman, the Yendi Constituency Chairman, Alhaji Baba Gazali, noted that the unanimous decision was taken by an expanded Constituency Executive Committee meeting held on 23rd December in accordance with Article 3, Clause (9)(1), Clause (7)(1), and Clause (8)(1) of the party’s 2017 constitution.
The letter stated that the decision was based on complaints regarding the conduct of the culprits ahead of the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections, including:
Standing as an independent candidate against the officially elected parliamentary candidate of the party
Joining or declaring support for another political party
Supporting an independent candidate in the December 7th 2024 election in the Yendi constituency
Party officials refusing to work for the party in the just-ended presidential and parliamentary elections.
The statement pointed out:
The leadership of the party had to invoke the relevant provisions of the party's constitution which were breached by the said persons, with complaints lodged against them by other party members in the form of petitions.
This latest development follows a similar action taken by the Agona West branch of the NPP, which expelled 280 members, including incumbent MP Cynthia Mamle Morrison, from the party.
The letter, dated 16th December, indicated that, effective immediately, the expelled individuals are no longer members of the NPP. They are barred from holding any positions in the party, attending meetings, or using the party’s symbols and flags.
