Kwame Opoku celebrated his first start since rejoining Asante Kotoko with a brilliant goal as the Porcupine Warriors recorded a 2-0 victory over Bibiani Goldstars in the Ghana Premier League on Friday night at the Baba Yara Stadium.
Justice Blay gave Kotoko the lead in the 18th minute, converting a penalty after a Goldstars defender handled Ndongani Samba Gilbani’s goal-bound header.
The hosts kept the visitors on the back foot as they mounted pressure from all corners of the game.
Goldstars’ hopes of a comeback suffered a huge blow in the 36th minute when Bright Boakye Kyereh was sent off for a dangerous challenge on Amidu to reduce them to 10 men.
Opoku, who had come closest with a flying header just before the break, sealed it in the 74th minute with a sublime strike that showed his composure and quality.
The forward’s return to Kotoko has injected fresh energy into the team, which now lies second in the league, just three points off the top.
Kotoko dominated possession, had 51% and had 14 goal attempts, seven of which were on target, while Goldstars had only two shots on target.
A fourth straight win underlines the growing momentum of Kotoko as they mount a serious title challenge.
