NPP wins 7 disputed constituencies; 2 seats pending as NDC boycotts process

The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has won 7 out of the 9 disputed constituencies from the 2024 presidential election. This follows the Electoral Commission’s decision to re-collate results in these constituencies, citing discrepancies and attacks on the Commission during the declaration of some results.

The controversial re-collation was held at the Greater Accra Regional Office of the Electoral Commission (EC) on Saturday, 21 December, amid heavy security presence. However, the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) described the process as illegal, citing a pending lawsuit filed at the Supreme Court.

Despite the boycott, the Commission proceeded with the exercise and announced winners for seven constituencies as follows:

1. Nsawam-Adoagyiri (Eastern Region)

The incumbent Member of Parliament, who doubles as the Majority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, retained his seat after he was declared winner following days of stalemate. Annoh-Dompreh, who contested on the NPP ticket, secured 29,640 votes, beating his main contender, Amenorpe Philbert Fummey of the NDC, who gained 29,433 votes.

2. Okaikwei Central (Greater Accra Region)

On 8 December, the NDC’s Baba Sadiq was declared winner of the constituency based on pink sheets from 141 polling stations, with 31 still in contention. However, this declaration was overturned after the re-collation in favour of the incumbent MP, Patrick Yaw Boamah of the NPP. Boamah gained 21,099 votes, narrowly beating Sadiq, who secured 19,368 votes. The NDC candidate rejected the results, accusing the NPP of colluding with the EC to rig the outcome.

3. Tema Central (GREATER ACCRA)

An earlier declaration was made in favour of the NDC’s Ebi Bright. However, this result was flagged as unlawful, with EC officials indicating it was declared under duress. After re-collation, the results were overturned in favour of the NPP’s candidate, Charles Forson, who secured 18,870 votes. Bright came in close second, polling 18,815 votes.

4. Ahafo Ano North (Ashanti Region)

This seat was declared in favour of the NPP’s parliamentary candidate, Nana Agyemang-Prempeh, who polled 20,353 votes. Coming in close second was Kwasi Adusei of the NDC, who secured 20,232 votes.

5. Ahafo Ano South West (Ashanti Region)

After re-collation, the NPP’s Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah was declared MP-elect with a total of 16,680 votes, beating Sedik Abubakar of the NDC, who garnered 16,540 votes.

6. Obuasi East (Ashanti Region)

The NPP’s Patrick Boakye-Yiadom emerged victorious after the re-collation, winning with 18,558 votes, narrowly defeating Samuel Aboagye of the NDC, who gained 18,539 votes.

7. Techiman South (Bono East Region)

Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah retained his seat, securing victory with 46,663 votes. Christopher Beyere Baasongti of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) came in second with 43,429 votes.

Pending Results

Meanwhile, parliamentary results from two constituencies are still pending after the EC suspended the re-collation exercise due to the unavailability of hard copies of pink sheets for some electoral areas. These include the Dome Kwabenya and Ablekuma North constituencies. The Commission is set to make a final decision in the coming days.
