A U.S based philanthropic organization has constructed a mechanized borehole facility for Yevi, a farming community in the Agotime Ziope District of the Volta Region.
Provision of the borehole by International Coalition for the Eradication of Hunger and Abuse, (ICEHA) ends the era of Yevi and it's surrounding communities feeding on contaminated water.
The residents couldn't afford GHC500.00 to repair a borehole constructed by the district assembly hence had to rely on water bodies at abandoned sand winning sites.
However, the water bodies often dry up leaving residents with no option but to scoop muddy water off the ground for domestic use.
Kpesese Emefa, a resident, explained that they had to travel so many kilometers to a near by community, Dzalele, to buy water for domestic use when the water bodies completely dry up.
"We have children and newborn babies who we have to take care of, and without water, we can't do anything. Our children often contract diarrhea after consuming water from the sand winning sites", she stated.
A food vendor, Mary Klutse lamented she that had no choice but to use the "unwholesome water to cook food for pupils at the community basic school after sieving it."
Nevertheless, residents of Yevi can now breath a sigh of relief after International Coalition for the Eradication of Hunger and Abuse came to their rescue and provided them portable water.
The Executive Director of ICEHA, Carolyn Ronis said it was worrying to see a fellow human being share water with animals considering the health implications hence her organization's decision to provide the community potable water.
She stated that her organisation had adopted the community adding, "we will teach them beads making, tailoring, batik and how to market their products and work together as a community to become self-sufficient", she added.
Aside from struggling to survive the scarcity of potable water, Yevi and its surrounding communities lack access to healthcare. Residents travel several kilometers to receive medical attention.
An opinion leader in the community, Wisdom Amewose who was grateful to ICEHA appealed to the organization and government to construct a health centre in the area.
"Because there is no health centre in our area, some people who suffer minor illness sometimes lose their lives. It will really do us a lot of good if a health centre is stationed in our area", he appealed.
In the interim, ICEHA is using arts to promote education in the area by designing a dilapidated classroom block at Yevi community basic school to make it look attractive to pupils, as it raises fund to construct a new classroom block and a modern sanitary facility for the school.
The community in showing appreciation bestowed on the Executive Director of ICEHA, Carolyn Ronis, "Woman of Peace" title.
