THE Minister of Roads and Highways, Mr Kwesi Amoako Atta, has directed the Department of Urban Roads (DUR) to take an immediate action to asphalt the road from Avenor to Neoplan Station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle, in Accra.
This follows an appeal by the drivers unions at a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Roads and Highways, yesterday in Accra.
This meeting arranged by the Member of Parliament of the area, Ahmed Arthur, followed persistent complains by the drivers unions for government to rehabilitate the road, which had became bad following floods that hit the area, in recent years.
According to the chairman of the Neoplan Welfare Union (NWU), Mr Kassim Alhassan, the bad nature of the road had been a bother to the union and appealed to the minister to fulfil the President’s pledge to create favourable climate for businesses.
He indicated that the union with over 2000 vehicles and cargo tracks would not be allowed to be grounded due to a small defect that could be rectified and pledged to support the ministry in rehabilitating the road in the shortest possible time.
“We are appealing to government through the minister to as a matter of urgency reconstruct the road for the smooth transportation of goods and services”.
The road which leads to the Neoplan station at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle has been in a deplorable state, forcing drivers to park vehicles on the side ways.
Mr Atta after inspecting the road, directed the DUR to as a matter of urgency complete preparatory works for the rehabilitation of the road to commence in two weeks.
He assured that, the road would be completed by the end of December to ensure that the peak December season for the unions are not jeopardised.
“Everything possible would be done to ensure that the road is reconstructed to international standards to open up the place for the socio-economic development of the people,” he added.
The minister urged the drivers to remove all parked vehicles along the road to ensure the early completion of the project.
Mr Arthur commended the minister for initiating the project, and expressed optimism that the people would keep faith with the government as efforts were made to address their grievances.
