The National Election Security Task Force (NESTF) has deployed two helicopters to monitor today’s political rallies organized by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as they conclude their campaign activities ahead of the December 7 general elections.
At a press briefing at the NESTF Press Center, ACP Grace Akrofi, Director-General of the Public Affairs Directorate, emphasized the comprehensive security measures in place to ensure the safety of rally participants and the general public.
“This morning, two police helicopters will be flying over the rally grounds to provide surveillance and monitor activities on the ground. The aim is to ensure the safety of all persons at the rallies and to quickly identify and respond to any suspicious activities,” Akrofi stated.
She reassured the public of the Task Force’s commitment to maintaining peace and order throughout the rallies, despite the close proximity of the events.
International Observers and Diplomats Pledge Support for Peaceful Elections
Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, representing the West African Elders Forum (WAEF), commended Ghana for its democratic maturity and stability.
Speaking at the press briefing, he highlighted the importance of peaceful elections in preserving democracy.
“We want Ghana to maintain its position as a model of democracy in Africa. Elections are not wars. Only one person can win, and we plead with politicians to accept outcomes peacefully. Misinformation is a major threat during elections, and we urge the media to verify sensitive information before dissemination,” Jonathan said.
The WAEF delegation, which includes former leaders from across West Africa, will remain in Ghana during and after the elections to mediate in case of emerging tensions.
European Delegation Applauds Ghana’s Democratic Processes
A delegation from the European Centre for Electoral Support (ECES), led by its Founder and Executive Director Fabio Bargiacchi, also visited the NESTF Press Center.
Mr. Bargiacchi praised Ghana’s long-standing democratic practices, dating back to 1992, as a benchmark for the region.
