The District Chief Executive of Jaman North in the Bono Region, Mr. Adane Ankomah has expressed concern about the increasing number of road crashes in the area, as seven accidents, three deaths and three seriously injured persons were recorded during the first quarter of the year.
Speaking in an interview on Sunyani based Ark FM, Mr Ankomah cautioned drivers, motorcycle and tricycle riders to comply with road traffic regulations, saying defaulters would be arrested and made to face court action.
“I wish to caution all drivers, motorcycle and tricycle riders in the district to obey all road traffic regulations since anyone who defaults would be arrested and put before court”, he said
The DCE advised drivers to undertake regular maintenance of their vehicles and to avoid drink-driving, over-speeding and over-loading, which are major contributory factors to road accidents.
“Drivers must avoid over speeding, overloading and driving while drunk, which are all major factors causing road accidents”, he said.
DEPLORABLE ROADS
Meanwhile, Mr. Isaac Osei, the District Chief Executive for Berekum West, also in the Bono region, has given assurance that the government would rehabilitate all deplorable roads in the district to minimise road accidents and enhance commercial activities.
“Let me assure Nananom and the people of Berekum West that the government has plans to fix all deplorable roads in the district as part of measures to reduce road crashes and also enhance business activities”, he said.
Mr Osei gave the assurance in response to a plea by the Dwantoahene of Tewbaabi about the state of the roads in the district.
The DCE disclosed that the government has given approval for 18.1 kilometers of roads to be tarred in the district and that work has already started and entreated the people to exercise restraint for the completion of work on their roads.
“The government has given approval for works on 18.1 kilometers of roads in the district and work has already commenced”, he said and added that “I will, therefore, ask for patience from Nananom and the good people in the district and support contractors to complete the works on schedule”.
In a related development, construction work on the Sunyani Berlin Top road in Sunyani has begun as the contractor has moved to site. The road has been a topic for discussion for some time now, as residents and drivers who ply the road have expressed concerns over the poor nature of the road, which they claim has affected their activities and health.
Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia cut the sod for the construction and rehabilitation of Sunyani inner city roads in September before the 2020 December elections. Present were chiefs and people of Sunyani Traditional Council.
The project involves the construction and rehabilitation of a total of 29 kilometers of roads in the Bono regional capital and part of work on major roads across the country funded by the Sinohydro.
Speaking at the ceremony, Vice President Bawumia said the Sunyani inner-city roads project was part of the government’s vision of improving and expanding access to road networks.
Dr Bawumia highlighted the impact of the agreement on infrastructural development in the country, disclosing that the NDC government tried as much as they could to abrogate the agreement.
Each of Ghana’s 16 regions will benefit from the Sinohydro arrangement, with hospital projects, the extension of electricity to rural communities, and construction of court and residential buildings for the Judicial Service, landfill sites and industrial parks expected to take place.
The $2 billion Master Project Support was agreed between Ghana and China in 2018 to address major infrastructure challenges in the country.
Under the deal, Sinohydro Group Limited of China will provide infrastructure of government’s choice in exchange for Ghana’s refined bauxite.
The first phase of the project, costing $646.6 million, commenced with the Tamale Interchange project.
Under Lot 6 of phase 1 of the projects, which have been approved by Parliament, is the construction of Sunyani Inner City and Berekum township roads.
A total of thirty-nine (39) kilometres of roads will be constructed in Sunyani and Berekum township. In Sunyani, twenty-nine (29) kilometres of inner-city roads will be constructed, whilst Berekum Township will see ten (10) kilometres of its roads constructed.
