The Akuapems, like other tribes, have a unique story behind their existence and heritage.
Their name which means '1000 groups', from the Akan words "Kuw Apem" emanates from the history of how thousands of them, together with the help of the Akyems, defeated their then rivals; the Akwamus, to gain Independence.
Today, they have 17 traditional towns, divided into 5 divisions, with 5 sub-chiefs and overlords from the Akyem line; the Okuapehene.
In the first episode of this edition of People and Places, we learn all about the origin, leadership, settlements, and clan systems of the Akuapems.
