The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and 2nd Vice President of CAF, Kurt Edwin Simeon-Okraku, has held a crucial meeting with the newly constituted MTN Elite U19 Championship Committee as preparations intensify for Ghana’s premier youth football competition.
The meeting, held on Friday, September 19, 2025, at the GFA Headquarters, introduced Hon. Eric Edem Agbana, Member of Parliament for Ketu North, as the new chairman of the committee. He takes over from Abdul Salam Yakubu.
Okraku praised Hon. Agbana for his readiness to serve Ghana football at such a vital developmental level and commended the committee’s role in shaping the future of the game.
The MTN Elite U19 Championship, now backed by telecommunications giant MTN, is designed to unearth and nurture young footballers. The competition offers second-division players born in 2007 a platform to showcase their talent and attract attention from elite academies, national youth teams, and professional clubs.
Hon. Agbana expressed gratitude for the confidence reposed in him, promising to deliver a youth football program that sets new standards. He will be supported by Vice Chairman Enoch Agyare Addo and members Edem Kofi Ansah, Michael Kwabla Fiaduse, and Samuel Owusu Amoah, alongside technical and administrative staff from the GFA.
President Okraku stressed that the championship ties into the GFA’s broader Power to the Youth policy, the FIFA Talent Development Scheme, the Elite Academies project, and the Catch Them Young refereeing initiative.
The tournament will take place at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence, with the semi-finals and final scheduled for the McDan AstroTurf in Teshie.
A grand launch and several media activities will be rolled out in the coming weeks as the GFA prepares for what promises to be the biggest youth football festival in the country.
