Kunkrogu (U/W), Aug. 13, GNA – Kunkorgu community in the Sissala West District of Upper West Region has been applauded for improving the traditional governance system after successfully installing Kuoro Hassan Buku Forkah IV as a Divisional Chief.
The 41-year-old farmer has been acting as the regent for years in the local farming community with a population of about 1,500.
His installation brought some relief as the community now joins comity of communities with substantive chiefs in the Sissala District.
Speaking during the installation, Alhaji Sulemana Alhassan, the Upper West Regional Minister, thanked the community members for taking such a bold step to “improve on traditional governance”.
He urged the community members to support Kuoro Forkah IV to succeed and at the same time advised the Chief to listen and seek “wise counsel” from his subjects.
He also advised the Chief to constitute an Advisory Council to help him take decisions that would inure to the benefit of the community.
Alhaji Alhassan was unhappy about wanton destruction of the environment there by activities of charcoal burners and urged the Chief to mobilize his elders to tame the practice.
He appealed to Traditional Rulers in the District to consider partnering the Assembly to make lands available for plantation of woodlots to check fast environmental degradation.
He said government was prepared to help them with seedlings and also provide technical support to that effect.
Mr Mohammed Zackaria Bakor, the Sissala West District Chief Executive (DCE), described Ghana’s traditional institution as a highly respected one which acted as a custodian of the people’s moral values, norms and cultural heritage.
It also played vital role in maintaining peace and harmony for socio-economic and political development of the society.
“As a new entrant, the onus lies on you to complement efforts of the chiefs and people of the traditional area to ensure sustainable and lasting peace in the area,” he said.
Mr John S. Babineh, the Registrar of Upper West Regional House of Chiefs, advised the newly installed Chief to inform himself of the Chieftaincy Act 2008 (Act 759).
This, he said would help guide his actions as he led his people.
Kuoro Kuri Limann Biktie, the Paramount Chief of Gwollu Traditional Area, expressed his appreciation to the Kunkorgu people for the peacefully installation.
He appealed to other communities without substantive chiefs to emulate the good example.
Kuoro Forkah IV was full of joy for his people reposing confidence in him and promised to provide leadership that would guarantee peace and security.
He also pledged to clamp down on deviant social behaviours like roaming late in the night, stealing, school dropout and teenage pregnancies.
He appealed to the District Assembly to help provide water and electricity to the Community-Based Health Planning and Services (CHPS) compound to enhance the smooth running of the facility.
Kuoro Forkah IV also appealed for communal waste disposal containers to curb indiscriminate disposal.
The Islamic Mission has assisted the community with Islamic Senior High Technical School, which the new chief pleaded with government to help open, to promote vocational and technical education in the area.
