Substitute Mawuli Wayo turned hero for Hearts of Oak, scoring twice late in the game to inspire a dramatic 3-2 comeback win over Accra Lions in their Ghana Premier League matchday 15 clash at the WAFA Park in Sogakope on Sunday.
With two games left in the first round of the 2024/25 season, the Phobians were eager to extend their winning streak following their earlier loss to rivals Asante Kotoko. They started brightly, with Mohammed Hussein heading home a Saani Mohammed cross to give Hearts a first-half lead.
Accra Lions, however, staged a fightback, showing determination despite their struggles in the relegation zone. Lucky Nestor equalized before Ezekiel Alladoh struck to put the hosts ahead.
With time running out, Wayo stepped up in spectacular fashion, scoring twice in the final 10 minutes to complete Hearts’ impressive turnaround and secure all three points. The victory lifts Hearts back into the Top 4, while Accra Lions remain rooted in the relegation battle.
Hearts of Oak will next face Legon Cities in a local derby at home, while Lions travel to the Tuba AstroTurf to face Dreams FC.
In other games, Berekum Chelsea and Dreams FC played out a goalless draw at the Golden City Park, Karela United snatched a late point against Vision FC, and Samartex shared the spoils with Nations FC in a 1-1 draw.
