Mohamed Ouahbi has been appointed head coach of Morocco following the departure of Walid Regragui, less than four months before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ouahbi, 49, steps up from his role with Morocco’s under-23 side, becoming the man tasked with guiding the Atlas Lions into the global tournament.
The Royal Moroccan Football Federation confirmed the coaching change as part of plans to maintain the team’s progress.
“This is not simply a change. The objective is to ensure the continuous development of Moroccan football through a structured roadmap,” the federation said in a statement.
Ouahbi takes over a team that has enjoyed notable success in recent years. Morocco reached the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, becoming the first African side to reach the last four of the competition.
The North Africans also made it to the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on home soil but were beaten 1-0 by Senegal after extra time.
Attention now turns to preparations for the World Cup, where Morocco have been drawn in Group C alongside Brazil, Scotland and Haiti.
Ouahbi’s first task will be to oversee the team during upcoming friendly matches against Ecuador and Paraguay next month as Morocco begin their final build-up to the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
