The Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has called on the Ghana Police Service and the Interior Ministry to recall gun licenses from individuals who brandish firearms in public.
According to him, it is illegal for people to display their firearms on the streets, stressing that anybody who is a real gunner would not “flaunt their firearms around because a firearm is not a pen that you use to write on paper.”
Speaking on TV3 New Day on Monday, June 8, Mr Boakye-Dankwah asserted that the issue of people possessing firearms, whether legally or not, is a very “serious issue”.
The Government Spokesperson also criticised the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Member of Parliament for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Mavis Hawa Koomson for firing warning shots at a voter registration centre in 2020.
He argued that “I would not sit here to commend her because giving a warning shot can have a stray bullet that can kill an individual, and so it’s wrong.”
Additionally, he encouraged the public to “open up the conversation” if they believed that Hawa Koomson’s case wasn’t handled well by the police.
“I have stated very clearly that it’s not right for you to be having in your possession even if it’s licensed and brandishing it around or issuing warning shots because you feel your life is under threat.

“In all of my knowledge and understanding, guns must be in the hands of responsible people. When you’re licensing a gun, you are licensing a gun with the background of the individual that you are licensing for and for the purposes that the person will not use the gun indiscriminately. In fact, in other jurisdictions, these licenses are even withdrawn from you if people feel that you’re not using the gun in the manner in which you must use it.
“We must have a forward conversation if the Ghanaian people feel, and I feel the same way that what Hawa Koomson did in 2020… if those issues have not been dealt with bring back the issues to the table,” he stated.
Also, the Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security underscored that Awutu Senya East Constituency cannot be turned into combat, urging the constituents to uphold peace and harmony going into the 2024 elections.
“It is important that, in the harmony of peace, you should be very mindful of how you walk around with even your so-called legalised weapons because weapons must be in the hands of responsible people.
“Weapons are not supposed to be in the hands of irresponsible people and if persons have weapons that are in their hands that they’re using it irresponsibly, I would admonish that the small arms and the Ghana Police and the Interior Ministry should recall those weapons,” he emphasised.
