The coordinator of Ghana Psychological Association (GPA), Joana Larry Afutu, has disclosed the association has done splendid work in the fight against the novel coronavirus (Covid-19).
Speaking on TV3’s Covid -19 360 programme, she said the association has been giving psycho-social support to those who test positive for Covid-19.
The reason for their support, she explained, is to help patients withstand or overcome stigmatization associated with the disease.
According to her, statistics has shown that when the outbreak became massive, anxiety was on the rise among citizens but through psycho-social therapy by psychologists, it has reduced drastically.
She also noted that depression and stress level are on the rise due to people thinking and wondering how Ghana as a nation can battle the virus.
Madam Joana maintained that the virus has affected people psychologically due to the fear of contracting it in their workplaces, markets, schools and other public places, the reason psychologists are working hard to eradicate such stress among individuals.
She encouraged citizens to visit various psychological centres for good health care, advising that, seeing psychologists does not necessarily mean one has metal disorder.
Madam Joana called on the government support the association in order to get more facilities to treat mental health problems in Ghana and also help psych citizens.
She also urged the government to help employ more psychologists in our various health centres.
