The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a suspect for the unlawful possession of 713 slabs of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs, following an operation at Asanso in the Ashanti Region.
The suspect was arrested on January 26, 2026, when a police team on snap check duty intercepted a Mercedes Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718–25 at the Asanso checkpoint.
A statement signed and shared with The Ghanaian Times said the suspect was identified as Atampugri Akanyani, the driver of the vehicle.
The statement revealed that a search conducted on the bus led to the discovery of nine nylon sacks containing dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs, which had been concealed in the vehicle.
It said the sacks were opened and found to contain a total of 713 compressed slabs of dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.
The statement further disclosed that the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe the officers with an amount of GH¢150,000 during the arrest, but the offer was declined.
According to the police, the suspect is currently in custody assisting with investigations, while efforts are ongoing to trace the source of the suspected narcotic drugs and identify other persons connected to the offence.
