A FIERCE gun battle between policemen and some suspected armed men who attempted to forcibly free their accomplices from police custody has resulted in the deaths of two suspected robbers and an injury to a police officer.
The deceased suspects, identified as Sumaila Munkaila alias ‘Guda’ and Umaro Musah, were arrested for highway robbery and, during investigations, led policemen to a place called Yizesi, near Fumbisi in the Upper East Region, to retrieve their guns, which they had buried in a thick bush.
While searching for the guns, some people, perhaps accomplices of Guda and Musah, who were hiding in the bush, opened fire on the policemen, who retaliated, resulting in the shootout and eventual deaths of the two suspects, who had attempted to escape.
Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Nyaaba, who made the disclosure during a press conference yesterday, said Guda and his group were highway robbers who had been terrorising travellers on the Obuasi and Manso-Nyinahin stretch in the Ashanti Region.
He said, “The Command gathered intelligence that suspect Sumaila Munkaila, who is wanted in connection with multiple roadblock robberies, was hiding in Tamale in the Northern Region.
“An intelligence-led operation was promptly mounted on April 25, 2026. At approximately 20:55 hours, the team arrested suspect Sumaila Munkaila, at Vitin in Tamale,” adding that Guda admitted his involvement in several highway robberies and also mentioned his four accomplices.
“During interrogation, the suspect admitted his involvement in three specific incidents: the attack on the convoy of Ditundini Adiali Ayagitam, the Chiana-Pio, on July 20, 2025; a roadblock robbery on the Buipe-Tamale stretch on April 21, 2026; and a roadblock robbery on the Yizesi-Fumbisi stretch on April 22, 2026.
“The suspect mentioned four accomplices; Umaro Musah, Tongude, Sumaila, and Berra,” he disclosed.
DCOP Nyaaba said on April 26, 2026, the suspects led the police to the location only for armed men to open fire from within the bush, and the suspects attempted to escape, leading to the fatalities.
“The suspects were conveyed to the Tamale Government Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival by the medical officer on duty,” he said. “The bodies are being transferred to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital Mortuary for preservation and autopsy.”
DCOP Nyaaba further disclosed that the police managed to retrieve the suspect’s buried guns, adding that efforts are underway to arrest Tongude, Sumaila, and Berra, who are at large.
“The team proceeded with the search and recovered the following weapons and ammunition, which had been concealed in sacks and buried in the ground: one (1) CZ805 assault rifle bearing serial number CO74258, loaded with fourteen rounds of 5.56x39mm ammunition; one (1) AK-47 assault rifle loaded with twenty-eight (28) rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, with an additional twenty-eight (28) rounds recovered separately, bringing the total to fifty-six rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition; one (1) pump-action gun with six rounds of BB cartridges; one (1) single-barrel gun and four jackets were also recovered,” he disclosed.
DCOP Nyaaba, on behalf of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), commended all officers who took part in the multi-regional intelligence-led operation, which has helped to dismantle the robbery gang responsible for a series of roadblock attacks along the Obuasi and Manso-Nyinahin stretch in Ashanti Region.
