Former Black Stars captain Charles Kwablan Akonnor has opened up about the challenge of convincing his two football-playing sons to represent Ghana internationally, acknowledging that their upbringing in Germany makes it a difficult decision.
Charles Herrmann, 20, and Jesaja Herrmann, 25, were both born and raised in Germany and have represented the country at various youth levels, from U-16 to U-20. Charles recently signed with Belgian Pro League side Cercle Brugge, while Jesaja has moved to German lower-division club FC Bocholt.
"It’s difficult to convince them to come to Ghana," Akonnor told Graphic Sports, reflecting on the natural pull of the country where they have built their lives and footballing identities.
"Because they grew up in Germany, but of course, if need be or if the opportunity arises, we will be able to make that decision," he added, leaving the door open for a future switch.
Akonnor's comments highlight the personal and professional complexities faced by dual-nationality players.
While his sons have established their careers within the German football system, the former national team captain, who led Ghana at the 2000 Africa Cup of Nations, indicated that the family would be ready to discuss representing Ghana should the right circumstances emerge in the future.
