Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw is seeking to name a 27-man squad for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, but the plan has met resistance from the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF), which prefers to limit the squad to 24 players due to financial considerations.
CAF has approved expanded squad lists of up to 28 players for AFCON 2025, increasing the previous standard of 23. The adjustment is intended to help teams manage player workload and address potential health concerns during the month-long tournament.
However, CAF will only fund expenses for 23 players, leaving national federations responsible for covering the cost of any additional squad members up to the 28-player cap, including allowances, travel and accommodation. Federations may also register up to 17 technical staff.
Thiaw is keen to maximise the depth available to him as Senegal chase a second continental crown, but the FSF is reluctant to take on the extra financial burden, creating a standoff ahead of the squad announcement.
Senegal begin their AFCON campaign on December 23, facing Botswana in their opening Group C match. They will also meet DR Congo and Benin as they seek to advance from a competitive group.
The Lions of Teranga lifted the title in 2021, their first in history, but were eliminated in the Round of 16 at the last edition by eventual champions Ivory Coast.
