President Akufo-Addo has touted the achievements of the country’s security services under his administration.
He said their collaborative efforts have ensured that “Our country’s territorial integrity is intact.”
The President said this during his final State of the Nation Address (SONA) on January 3.
“Ghana remains the only country in the neighbourhood to have not fallen victim to terrorism. I wish to pay great homage to the security managers for the work done to keep the country safe,” the President stated.
The SONA, mandated by Article 67 of the 1992 Constitution, provides the President with an opportunity to report on the nation’s status before leaving office.
This event also marks the final session of the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic, which will be officially dissolved on Monday, January 6, 2025. Following its dissolution, the 9th Parliament will convene at 11:00 PM the same day to elect a Speaker and two Deputy Speakers.
President Akufo-Addo bemoaned the continued prevalence of the Bawku conflict.
“It is a matter of great distress to me that despite our best effort, the Bawku conflict remains unresolved, ” he lamented.
Touching on Galamsey, the outgoing President noted that, “I knew that fighting galamsey was not a universally popular thing. But I was prepared to put my presidency on the line. The fight against galamsey led to the loss of many parliamentary seats. This impacted the numbers in parliament which impacted my second term in government.”
