One of the Democracy Hub protesters who were arrested and granted has accused the Police of frustrating the process to complete their bail process.
In a Facebook post, she said her bail was granted around 11am yesterday Monday, October 7, but the court order was only sent to the police around 2pm today Tuesday, October 8.
“The police needs to verify the sureties, this still hasn’t been done, The police need to sign the “Release form” after verifying the sureties, this still hasn’t been done, Currently all the personnel at Ghana Police Service who need to do the verification and consequently sign the release form are at the Court premises currently, The person who signs the bail bond closed at 4:00pm today, The person who needs to sign the bail bond at the High Court apparently won’t be working tomorrow, See you next week !! Do you see how the state conspires to frustrate its citizens? 16 days in police custody and counting,” she wrote on Facebook.
The Accra High Court on Monday, October 7 granted bail to 20 members of the Democracy Hub, the group accused of holding an unlawful assembly in Accra.
That was after lawyers for the accused persons filed a bail application at two different divisions of the High Court in Accra yesterday Monday October 7. The Criminal Division of the High Court presided over by Justice Comfort Kwasiwor Tasiame admitted nine of the accused persons to bail in the sum of GH¢70,000 each with two sureties.
Eleven other accused persons were admitted to bail in the sum of GH¢20,000 each with two sureties by the General Jurisdiction Division of the High Court, presided over by Justice Ayitey Armah-Tetteh.
The Leading Member of Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker Vormawor has however been refused bail by the Accra High Court.
Lead counsel for Barker Vormawor, Dr Justice Srem Sai in his bail application indicated to the court that his client wasn’t a flight risk and had an identifiable place of abode.
He reminded the lawyers that Oliver was already on trial for a treason felony charge. He also indicated he wasn’t convinced the Democracy Hub leader would turn up in court. In his defense however, Dr Srem Sai explained that nothing barred his client from reappearing before the court since he didn’t abscond while on a felony charge.
“For a man who hasn’t run away on a charge of treason how will he run away on a charge of misdemeanor?
“The ultimate question is whether he’ll present himself for trial. The overwhelming evidence will bethat he has for the past 3 years been available for the charge of treason, he’ll make himself available for the current charges,” Dr Justice Srem Sai noted.
