Brandon Thomas-Asante found the net for Coventry City in their Carabao Cup third-round clash against Tottenham Hotspur, but his efforts were in vain as Coventry exited the competition following a late comeback by Spurs.
In a keenly contested match, Thomas-Asante gave the Championship side a deserved lead in the 63rd minute, confidently sweeping in Norman Bassette’s low cross.
Despite Coventry’s strong performance, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou’s side mounted a dramatic late comeback to secure a 2-1 victory.
Djed Spence equalised for Spurs in the 88th minute, latching onto a pass from Dejan Kulusevski. Five minutes into added time, Brennan Johnson sealed the win for Tottenham with a composed finish, following a fine through-ball from Rodrigo Bentancur.
Postecoglou acknowledged the struggle his team faced, saying, “We had to just hang in there somehow and we did. We weren’t fluent or cohesive. I have consistently said there is no easy or quick fix to where we want to get to, and one result doesn’t change that.”
The defeat ended Coventry’s EFL Cup run despite Thomas-Asante’s impressive form, as he scored his second goal of the competition. Tottenham’s victory ends their two-match losing streak and secures their spot in the draw for the last 16.
Thomas-Asante, part of the Black Stars squad that faced Angola and Niger in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers earlier this month, will now turn his focus back to the domestic league following Coventry’s cup exit.
