Former Dreams FC midfielder Aziz Issah missed out on the Goal of the Year award as Angola’s Mabululu clinched the accolade at the 2024 CAF Awards.
Aziz’s breathtaking long-distance strike from the middle of the field against Angolan outfit APC Lobito in last season’s CAF Confederation Cup earned a spot among the final 11 nominations.
Issah’s goal was up against some stiff competition, with other nominees including Aboubakari Koita of Mauritania, Denis Omedi of Kitara FC, Ibrahim Adel of Mauritania, Kevin Pina of Cape Verde, Mabululu of Angola, Nene Dorgeles of Mali, Said Benrahma of Algeria, Sebastien Haller of Cote d’Ivoire, Wessam Abou Ali of Al Ahli, and Yassine Benzia of Algeria for the Goal of the Year award.
But it was Angolan centre-forward Mabululu whose curler against Namibia in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations was voted the winner
Mabululu won with 121,192 votes while Issah had a paltry 4512 to finish second from bottom in the voting process.
Aziz Issah was key to Dreams FC’s semi-final achievement in the CAF Confederation Cup in their debut season, scoring four goals and registering two assists.
The teenager’s impressive performance aided him in a loan move to La Liga giants FC Barcelona in the summer.
Meanwhile, Mohammed Kudus emerged as the sole Ghanaian to receive recognition at the award ceremony, following his inclusion in the prestigious CAF 11.
