The Ghana Mine Workers Union has announced a demonstration to be staged at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources to demand that government terminates the mining contract issued to Future Global Resources.
The demonstration will start on April 15.
The Union members alleged that the current Management of the company lacks the competency and skills to manage the Bogoso-Prestea mine.
General Secretary of the Ghana Mine Workers Union, Abdul Moomin Gbana said this when he addressed a news conference in Accra on April 8.
“The Union is proceeding to serve notice to embark on a series of demonstration, we intend to do so at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Jubilee House, the demonstration will last for 72 hours,” Mr. Gbana declared.
He explained that the Mine Workers Union has petitioned the Ministry of Natural Resources to terminate the contract of Future Global Resources but has not yielded any results.
“Minister should proceed to act in the best interest of the Ghanaian worker, he must ensure that the mining lease is terminated,” he demanded.
The General Secretary was also worried that the current situation has compelled workers to be laid off.
“Members’ lives are in limbo, children cannot go to school, medical bills they cannot pay, this is a matter that must be prioritized by government,” he stressed.
