Ghana secured a spot in the final of the African Games women’s football tournament after the Black Princesses delivered a stellar performance, defeating Senegal 3-1 at the Cape Coast Stadium.
Their remarkable display assures Ghana of at least a silver medal in the competition.
In the final, Ghana will face holders Nigeria, who earlier clinched their spot by defeating Uganda. Nigeria will provide formidable opposition for the Black Princesses.
Entering the semi-final as favourites, the Black Princesses had previously bested Senegal on their path to qualifying for the 2024 U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia. Their dominance was further evidenced by their group-topping performance in the African Games.
Ghana lived up to expectations in the semi-final, taking an early lead after 19 minutes through Tracey Twum. Ophelia Amponsah extended the lead to 2-0 before Senegal narrowed the deficit with a penalty by Rokhyatou Kande.
However, Ophelia Amponsah sealed the victory with her second goal, securing Ghana’s place in the final.
With a berth in the final guaranteed, Ghana now aims for gold. Coach Yussif Basigi and the team are determined to fulfil their promise made before the games, setting their sights on the top prize in women’s football.
