Mr Mahama Ayariga, Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, has assured President John Dramani Mahama that he will reconsider his decision to lay a Private Member’s Bill seeking the revocation of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
This assurance follows a request by the President urging him to hold back on introducing the bill on the floor of Parliament.
Responding to a question posed by Mr Habib Iddrisu, New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Tolon and First Deputy Minority Chief Whip, on whether he would respect the President’s request, Mr Ayariga said he valued the counsel of the President.
“Two heads are better than one. If the President has some thoughts and together, we can find a way of managing the situation, I will take onboard the President’s request and reconsider our action,” Mr Ayariga assured.
He further emphasized his confidence in the judgment of President Mahama, noting: “I have confidence in the wisdom of the President and on that basis, the President’s request will make me reconsider my decision.”
Mr Ayariga confirmed that he and the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Defeamekpor, co-sponsor of the bill, had submitted it to the Private Member’s Committee of Parliament, which subsequently approved it.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor, established to enhance the fight against corruption, has in recent times been the subject of debate within political and legal circles.
Mr Ayariga’s proposed bill had sought to revoke the office, but his latest remarks suggest a possible shift in approach following consultations with the President.
