The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has dismissed calls for the scraping of his outfit, stating that these calls are unfounded and lack evidence of his office’s performance.
Several individuals have criticized the OSP, claiming that it duplicates the functions of the Attorney General and other investigative bodies.
This includes an Economist with UDS, Dr. Michael Ayamga Adongo, who argues that the OSP is making a mockery of fighting corruption and corruption-related offences.
However, others also refute the call, including former legislator, Inusah Fusieni, who even criticised the attempts by these critics to downplay the importance of the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in the fight against corruption.
Meanwhile, speaking at a roundtable discussion on Tuesday, Mr. Agyebeng argued that these criticisms do not consider the actual performance of the office.
He stated that after an examination, it was found that the calls to scrap the OSP were baseless and did not have any supporting evidence.
He said, “We hear calls, a lot of the time from very high places, that the OSP should be scrapped and that it serves no useful purpose. On another score, there have been and there are attempts to discredit the office and its principal officers unfairly and unjustly, alongside formidable resistance and pushback.”
He added, “A careful examination of the reasons for the calls to do away with the OSP suggests that they were made without reference to the actual performance of the office in the six years of existence and that the calls are borne out of many of the teething challenges confronting the establishment of the office.”
Despite facing resistance and pushback, Agyebeng maintained that the OSP serves a useful purpose in the fight against corruption.
