Black Galaxies head coach Didi Dramani has emphasised the need for a careful and gradual integration of young striker Jerry Afriyie into senior-level football.
Afriyie, who plays for lower-tier side Thought FC, has been a standout in Ghanaian football, earning widespread recognition after being named the best player and top scorer at the All-Africa Games.
He recently made history by becoming the first player from Ghana’s third-tier league to earn a call-up to the Black Stars, scoring on his debut in a 2-1 defeat to Niger during an Africa Cup of Nations qualifier.
The 20-year-old is also part of the Black Galaxies squad vying for a place in the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Afriyie made an impact as a second-half substitute in Ghana’s goalless draw against Nigeria at the Accra Sports Stadium last Sunday.
When asked if Afriyie might start in the second leg, Coach Dramani expressed caution, advocating for a gradual approach to his development.
“Jerry is very mobile, a positive player, but we need to gradually integrate him into senior football. We appreciate what he’s done so far, but his transition must be handled carefully,” Dramani stated.
Ghana faces a challenging second leg against Nigeria in Uyo on December 28, with a place in the 2025 CHAN tournament at stake. The Super Eagles B and the Black Galaxies played out a goalless draw in the first leg, setting the stage for a decisive encounter.
