The 2024/25 Ghana Premier League season restarted on Saturday after the short recess due to the 2024 General Election with thrilling matches and upsets across the various stadia.
In the Saturday games, defending champions Samartex’s struggles in the league continued as Hearts of Lions beat them by a lone goal scored by Nana Oppong in the early stages of the game at the Nsenkyire Arena to claim the top spot on the league table. The win against the reigning champions sees Hearts of Lions extend their unbeaten streak in the league to six matches boasting of five wins and a draw.
Meanwhile, Vision FC grabbed their first win over Medeama after three consecutive losses in the GPL. Goals from Joshua Kwame Rhule, Frank Duku, and an injury-time goal from Emmanuel Kyei Baffour were enough to counsel out Medeama’s two goals and sealed the win for Vision in a five-goal thriller at the Nii Adjei Kraku II Sports Complex.
At the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium, Bibiani Gold Stars and Karela United shared the spoils in a 1-1 game. Karela United’s Faisal Gariba’s mistake in the 73rd minute led to an own goal. However, Nasiru Abdul Karim’s penalty in the 88th minute was crucial to secure a point for the Tamale boys and prevented Gold Stars from taking all three maximum points away.
Accra Lions grabbed their first win of the season as they narrowly defeated Nations FC 1-0 at the WAFA Park in Sogakope, thanks to Lucky Nwafor’s goal in the 15th minute.
Basake Holy Stars recorded two consecutive wins by thrashing Young Apostles 3-0 at the Ampain AAK II Sports Arena. Prince Opoku, Issa Yakobo, and the in-form Prince Tweneboah were the goal scorers on the day.
Berekum Chelsea and Aduana Stars played a 0-0 draw at the Golden City Park.
Dreams FC and Nostreman FC could not be separated at the Nana Koronamansah Park. Captain Joseph Esso opened the scores for Dreams FC in the 19th minute, but Collins Cudjoe equalized for Nsoatreman in the 58th minute to secure a point for Nsoatrema. The 1-all draw against Dreams makes it three consecutive draws for Nsoatreman in the league.
Legon Cities FC’s woes in the Ghana Premier League worsened with a 2-0 defeat to an in-form Bechem United at the University of Ghana Stadium on Saturday. The loss cemented Cities’ position at the bottom of the table, as their search for a turnaround this season continues. For Bechem United, the victory extended their remarkable unbeaten streak to nine matches across all competitions, elevating them to third place in the standings.
The matchday 13 of the 2024/25 GPL concluded at the at the Baba Yara Stadium in a mouth watering encounter between Kotoko and Hearts of Oak. A dying embers goal from prolific striker Albert Amoah was enough to secure all the three points for the Porcupine Warriors. The win against Hearts means Kotoko are unbeaten against their bitter rivals in their last four encounters.
