South African singer Tyla has acknowledged the impact of Afrobeats after securing the Best Afrobeats, Best African Act, and Best R&B titles at the 2024 MTV EMAs.
She out-performed notable competitors, including Ayra Starr, DBN Gogo, Diamond Platnumz, and TitoM & Yuppe.
“I want to thank my team, my family and the tigers for voting for me… Thank you to Afrobeats. Afrobeats has opened so many doors for African music. So thank you so much to Afrobeats,” Tyla said as she accepted the Best Afrobeats award at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMA), held on Monday, November 10, 2024 at Manchester’s Co-op Live arena.
Tyla not only won the Best Afrobeats award in a competitive category but also made history as the first African artiste to win three awards in one night at the EMAs: Best Afrobeats, Best African Act, and Best R&B
This reference to Afrobeats follows her 2024 VMAs victory, where she showcased her Amapiano background with her popular song “Water,” which also features Afrobeats elements.
Tyla outperformed well-known Nigerian artists like Asake, Rema, Ayra Starr, Burna Boy, and Tems at both the VMAs and EMAs awards ceremony.
