Mining has always been a part of Ghana’s history – Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said that mining has always been a part of the history of Ghana.

From ancient days, when Ghana was known as a center of gold wealth, to the present, he said, mining has shaped the identity of Ghana and its people.

“But I have always felt that more of this wealth should reach the north, where so many hardworking men and women deserve equal opportunities,” he said when commissioning the Cardinal Namdini Gold Mine in Talensi, Upper East Region on Friday November 8.

He said “This mine changes that, ushering in a new chapter where northern Ghana can thrive as a mining powerhouse, bringing growth and jobs to the very heart of Talensi and beyond.”

President Akufo-Addo stated that this project represents our collective belief that every region of our country has untapped potential waiting to be harnessed. Today, we are affirming Talensi’s place in our mining story, signaling that Ghana’s mineral wealth belongs to all her people. It’s a day of new beginnings, as we pour the first gold from the soil of the north, for all Ghanaians to share.

The benefits of this project will extend well beyond the mine itself, he added.

“With plans to develop better roads, expand utilities, and even build an airport in Bolgatanga, we are creating a foundation for long-term progress here. I am particularly heartened by Shandong Gold Group’s commitment to high environmental standards and their promise to invest in the community. Talensi deserves these investments, and my government will ensure that these partnerships uplift lives and create lasting change.

“This day reminds us of the power of unity and vision. As we pour this first gold, let it symbolize hope and resilience for every Ghanaian. Let’s continue to work together to make Ghana a place where every region, every community, shares in the promise of prosperity. May the Cardinal Namdini Gold Mine bring growth, dignity, and a bright future for Talensi, northern Ghana, and for all of us who love our beautiful country,” Mr Akufo-Addo said.
