The running mate of Dr. Bawumia, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh has said that it is an abomination (haram) for any Muslim to vote for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
According to Dr Prempeh, the NDC does not like Muslims.
Touring some constituencies in the Savanna Region on November 7, NAPO, as he is otherwise known, accused the NDC of removing Mahammed Muntaka and Haruna Iddrisu from the leadership of Parliament because they are Muslims.
He called on the Muslim communities to stand with the NPP to transform their lives.
“Haruna and Muntaka Mohammed, who removed them? John Mahama. They are Muslims oo, he said they are Muslims so they can’t lead NDC. The party that broke down the number one mosque in Accra, is NDC. When they broke it down, they called it what? Rawlings Park. When they broke down the mosque in Koforidua, they used it as a garbage dump. That is NDC for you. NDC, they don’t like Muslims,” he declared.
In a visit to the Yagbon Wura Palace, Opoku Prempeh, accompanied by his campaign team, sought blessings from the traditional authorities to begin his outreach efforts across the region.
Addressing a crowd at a rally in Larabanga, he spoke passionately, encouraging Muslim supporters to vote en masse for the NPP, describing it as the only political party with true concern for the welfare and development of Ghana’s Muslim population.
Opoku Prempeh went further to accuse the NDC of deliberately removing the iconic Larabanga Mosque from Ghana’s currency, a symbol of historical and religious significance to the Muslim community, during the administration of former President Jerry John Rawlings. According to Opoku Prempeh, this act is a clear indication of what he characterized as the NDC’s “dislike” for Muslims, citing it as evidence of the NDC’s lack of respect for Islamic heritage and the values held by Muslim Ghanaians.
In his remarks, he also criticized former President John Mahama and the NDC for pledging to build mortuaries in Muslim communities, which he interpreted as an affront to Muslim customs surrounding death and burial. Opoku Prempeh argued that this policy reflects a lack of cultural sensitivity and shows that the NDC does not understand the needs and beliefs of Ghana’s Muslim communities.
Dr. Opoku Prempeh concluded his address by calling on all Muslim voters to stand in solidarity with the NPP, asserting that an NPP victory would bring meaningful change and empowerment to Muslim communities across Ghana. He encouraged supporters to rally their family members, friends, and fellow community members to support the NPP, describing the party as the best hope for fostering unity, respect, and progress for Muslims in Ghana.
Mr Abu Jinapor, the Member of Parliament for Damongo, who was also present at the rally, highlighted the achievements of the NPP in the Damongo constituency. He reiterated the NPP’s commitment to improving infrastructure and social services in the region and expressed confidence that the NPP would maintain its influence in the Damongo constituency and expand its reach throughout the Savannah Region.
