Bawumia unveils job creation plan for Ghana’s youth

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, on November 3, 2024, presented a job creation strategy during a youth engagement event at the Borteyman Sports Complex in Accra, which also reached young people across all 16 regions via virtual connection.

In his address, Bawumia underscored his commitment to prioritizing the youth, pledging to implement dynamic, business-friendly policies that could generate nearly four million jobs if he wins the December 7 election.

Reflecting on recent economic hardships, particularly the extensive power outages experienced under the previous Mahama administration, Bawumia highlighted their detrimental effects on productivity and employment. He urged attendees to choose between a return to past failures or the promise of a progressive leadership focused on recovery.

Reaffirming his earlier commitments to the youth, Bawumia stated that their insights would be pivotal in shaping government policy. He aims to create a political landscape where young people are actively engaged in decision-making, empowering them to be catalysts for change in their communities.

A cornerstone of his job creation initiative is the enhancement of educational opportunities. Bawumia plans to expand student housing in public universities, provide scholarships for disabled individuals, and establish a centralized application system for tertiary education.

He also stressed the importance of preserving and improving the Free Senior High School (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programs, which have significantly boosted enrollment and gender equality in education.

Bawumia’s economic strategy includes leveraging public policy to drive growth. He proposed completing the Agenda 111 hospitals to ensure healthcare access in every district, potentially generating thousands of jobs. Additional plans involve a “Buy Ghana First” policy, the creation of a Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Bank, and the establishment of Special Economic Zones in border areas to stimulate economic activity.

His vision for the agricultural sector includes implementing technology and irrigation for large-scale farming, focusing on food security and job creation. He also suggested creating agrarian enclaves tailored to regional strengths, alongside investments in research and development to modernize the sector.

In addressing housing, Bawumia committed to developing social and affordable housing options for low-income workers. His plans extend to the mining industry, where he aims to maximize the benefits of Ghana’s resources through sustainable practices and local ownership.

To tap into the potential of the digital economy, Bawumia announced intentions to partner with educational institutions and tech companies to establish a National Robotics, Engineering, and AI Lab. He also proposed creating a Fintech Fund to support startups, eliminating import duties on mobile devices, and abolishing the contentious E-Levy to foster technological growth.

Bawumia also reaffirmed his vision of a thriving Ghana for its youth, emphasizing the importance of technology, inclusivity, and strong policies. His job creation plan is not merely an economic strategy but a rallying call for Ghana’s youth to seize their future and contribute to national progress.
