High powered meeting of the Education ministry over the KNUST impasse ends inconclusively as no indication is given about the fate of the university which has been effectively closed down.
It appears it will be a tall order resolving the impasse at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.
A long six hour meeting convened at the instance of the Education Ministry saw in attendance the National Security Minister Kan Dapaah, Minister of information designate Kojo Oppong Nkrumah and the Ashanti regional minister Simon Osei Mensah
It also had representatives of the local Students Representative Council and the National Union of Ghana students.
The chief executive of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Osei Asibey Antwi and heads of the security services in the Ashanti region later joined the final parts of the meeting.
Ultimate News gathers that the meeting took stock of both remote and immediate causes of the student rioting which turned chaotic.
Another critical issue that was on the table was the position of the students against the strong stance and strain of decisions taken by the university’s administration.
In the end it appeared the deliberations were inconclusive; as the Minister of education Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh would not say much only to indicate that the presidency will be notified of their findings.
The minister of Education Designate Kojo Oppong Nkrumah stated emphatically that the issues have moved beyond the autonomy of the governing council of the University.
“We know that ordinarily the university is semi-autonomous and they can handle their own affairs but it has become obvious that the matters have not been contained at that level so now there is a need for a high level intervention,” he noted.
Meanwhile the Ashanti and Kumasi Traditional council has taken keen interest in the ensuing on the KNUST campus. Earlier in the day the Mamponghene Dasebere Osei Bonsu the second and the Bantamahene Nana Baafour Asare Owusu Amantwatia V took separate tours of the campus to assess firsthand the extent of damage.
The traditional council has also summoned the administration of the school to its council meetings on Thursday.
