As the World Celebrates ‘World Day Against Child Labour’, authorities of Little Angel Academy at Pataase in the Ashanti Region are set to launch a campaign to support government to tackle Child Labour in the country.
The theme for the campaign is ‘Fighting Against Child Labour’ in Ghana.
Child labour remains at very high levels in the cocoa sector, with an estimated 2.1 million children working in cocoa fields in the Ivory Coast and Ghana alone, the Cocoa Barometer report 2018 has revealed.
The report attributes the high levels of poverty, increased cocoa production, and a lack of schools and other infrastructure, among others.
By conservative estimation, available statistics from our research shows that Kumasi alone now has more than ten thousand street children mainly selling in traffic and along major highways.
Also, our research findings reveal most of these children are found along Kejetia and the Racecourse lorry parks, Roman Hill, Amakom Roundabout and Anloga Junction.
The Campaign Manager of the project Mr. Eric Asumadu Asare speaking to Abusua FM’s Osei Kwadwo said the project is to find a lasting solution to reduce child labour in the country.
According to him, Ghana is losing the fight against child labour because many children in Ghana are still being robbed of the opportunity to attend school as they were forced to work long hours and, often, under dangerous conditions, with girls being exploited in domestic servitude and often abused.
The phenomenon, he noted, had also created many health-related problems among such children.
“There are many children who are on the street selling due to lack of support for them to further their education. We will support all these children by sending them to school through our foundation. We are also going to educate parents on effect of child labour to create awareness,” He said.
He therefore urged the Government to be extra committed and redouble its efforts to fight and eliminate Child Labour by creating a system that empowered institutions to prosecute perpetrators.
