The Ghana health service in the Ashanti region has banned the issuing of hepatitis B vaccines outside hospitals.
It follows the surge of some unscrupulous people in the region dressed in medical scraps posing as medical staff and administering the questionable vaccines.
The practitioners who usually work in market centres and deprived communities make money by charging fees from their unsuspecting clients.
Addressing a news conference in Kumasi, the Deputy Ashanti Regional health director in charge of public health Dr Awudzie Yeboah indicated that his outfit has mounted surveillance to fish out these fake medical personnel.
He indicated that, “one thing is even if they have the right vaccines they don’t have the cold chain because it is supposed to be under some regulated temperature. The one we caught at the market and sent to the police station, they had the vaccine carrier alright but the vaccine was hot and he will give it to you and collect money and you will think you have gotten the vaccine and meanwhile you didn’t”
Dr Awudzie Yeboah insisted, “We have decided that we want to give hepatitis B vaccines in our hospitals where we have sourced for proper quality vaccines.
He added that the first batch of these certified vaccines have been already deployed to the hospitals at a subsidized fee for the public.
