Judicial Reforms, The Only Guarantee to Deliver Justice Without Barriers – Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo
The Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo said her vision to achieve Justice without barriers in Ghana requires urgent Judicial Reforms in order to make the vision a reality.
These reforms she assured has began, one of which is the solarization of courts in Ghana.
Delivering the keynote address at a ceremony to inauguration the first ever solar powered electricity system at the Winneba High Court in the Central Region, Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo, said tools of technology ought to be employed to facilitate the smooth and efficient delivery of Justice in Ghana.
Solar Energy is one of such tools of technology and it is the reason why the Judiciary has taken the first step.
She indicated that over the next five years, the Judicial Service will be embarking on an extensive programme to solarize all 375 Courts nationwide.
Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency
Member of Parliament for Effutu Constituency, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, was full of praise for the fact that his constituency is the first to have been chosen for such a project. He made a direct request to the Chief Justice help his constituency to have their own Circuit Court.
He indicated that the constituency has a District and High Court, however, the missing link is the Circuit which results in the police having to travel all the way to Swedru to adjudicate matters that are required by law to go before a Circuit Court.
The lady Chief Justice in her speech, assured the member of Parliament and the people of Effutu that she will ensure that a Circuit Court is established in their constituency. She further requested the member of Parliament to assist the court in building a fence wall to secure the Court premises.
The Australian High Commissioner
In his address, the Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, H. E. Andrew Barnes expressed his country’s gratitude for being the partner of choice of the Judiciary for its solarisation agenda.
He assured that the High Commission will continue in the partnership to ensure that all Courts earmarked to be solarised are executed.
He urged all other State institutions to follow after the example of the Judiciary in order to harness the full potential Solar Energy in Ghana.
The Solar Project
The Chief Justice has one of her six point agenda for the Judiciary to develop a fully integrated system to seamlessly link all the various levels of Court through the application of technology and e-governance systems with energy Independence achieved from deploying Solar Energy.
To this end, the inauguration of the Solar powered Winneba High Court is a clear fulfilment of one of the components of the vision of the Chief Justice.
The Judicial Service going forward will collaborate with the Ministry of Energy to provide all district courts with solar powered energy to reduce the services of increasing utility bills with the added benefit of cost savings.
