President Akufo-Addo has made a request to the British government through the United Kingdom High Commissioner to Ghana, to consider increasing the number of Ghanaians who are annually selected to benefit from the Chevening International Scholarships and Fellowship Awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders.
Addressing the British High Commissioner to Ghana, former Chevening beneficiaries as well as current Chevening scholarship award recipients at the Flag Staff House when they paid a courtesy call on him, President Akufo-Addo said during his time as a practicing lawyer, many of the lawyers in his law firm, he recalls, benefited from the award and it did make a world of difference in their lives and practice. To that end, the President said the current number per his enquiry which stands at twenty (20) persons annually could be increased to afford more Ghanaians the opportunity to enjoy UK education.
The UK High Commissioner
Iain Walker, the UK High Commissioner to Ghana, in a short address indicated that so far, all individuals who have had the opportunity to receive scholarships and fellowships from the Chevening Awards scheme have distinguished themselves in their various fields of endeavour. Their shinning example is the reason why the UK government intends to continue with the awards scheme in Ghana.
The High Commissioner also observed that through the Chevening Awards scheme, the UK hopes to support the President’s vision of moving Ghana beyond aid. This support, he believes, will be made manifest by the quality of training that the awards recipients will receive and the contributions they will subsequently make to the socio-economic development of Ghana.
Chevening
Chevening is the UK government’s international awards scheme aimed at developing global leaders since 1983. Funded by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) and partner organisations, Chevening offers two types: Chevening Scholarships and Chevening Fellowships.
