The Eastern Regional branch of the Ghana Coalition of NGOs in Health has criticised the Ghana Health Service (GHS) over low public awareness and Surveillance on the seasonal meningitis disease.
According to the NGOs, cognizant of the seasonal period (October to March ) which the disease rises, it was imperative for GHS to issue health alert, intensify public awareness and surveillance on the disease for swift intervention on suspected cases, early diagnose and treatment to avoid needless deaths since the disease is treatable if diagnosed early.
As at Epidemiology Week 49 this year, 87 suspected cases of Meningitis cases have been recorded with 13 deaths recorded.
The Public Relations Officer and Organizer for the Coalition in the Eastern Region, Edmund Atweri Duodu told Ultimate News at the Annual General Meeting of the Coalition in Koforidua that careful study of the deaths recorded point out to ignorance over the symptoms of the disease, hence patients reported very late at the hospitals.
He said, but for media reports on the diseases, the public wouldn’t have been aware of the ‘outbreak’ of the meningitis in the country.
The Coalition has however commended the Eastern Regional Directorate of the GHS for the swift intervention in handling the situations in the Koforidua Secondary Technical School (SECTEC) and Asamankese Senior High School, (ASASSCO) which recently recorded fatalities each.
He said the Coalition of NGOs in Health has directed its members to embark on public education and awareness on the disease and help provide timely information for the GHS to strengthen its surveillance system.
