Girl child empowerment took centre stage when the Ghana United States Department Alumni Association camped over 500 female Senior High School students at the St Louis Senior High School in the Ashanti regional capital Kumasi.
The training covered subjects of sexual reproductive health; puberty; personal Hygiene; career and entrepreneurship.
Final year students of the St Louis Senior High School, Yaa Asantewaa Senior High School, Prince of Peace Girls Senior High School and the Kumasi Wesley Girls High SHS benefitted from the training.
The first session was a break out group discussion where mentors; old girls; head mistresses and representatives of the United States Department Alumni Association had close range interactions with the girls.
The main speaker; Senior Gynaecologist obstetrician and Public Interest Advocate Dr Ernest Kwarko thrilled the crowd with insights about sexuality; the harmful effects of early pregnancy; real clinical cases of complicated effects of unsafe abortion and the need for the young girls to either abstain from sex or use contraceptives.
Speaking to Ultimate FM and GHone NEWS on the sidelines of the programme, Dr Ernest Kwarko expressed the need for young girls to be identified early and mentored to stay away from activities that could obstruct their career progression.
He advised, “It is absolutely important that we mentor them to focus on studying to become adults, developing their careers and developing all the necessary skills in order to be able to adapt into adulthood.”
“Unprotected sex and unintended pregnancy are what I call the twins of career destruction and dream killers and these young girls have to understand that they can accidentally fall into it,” he added.
The Head of the Accra Chapter of the United States Department Alumni Association, Nana Yaa Appiah said the Association in collaboration with the United States Embassy is committed to empowering the next generation of female leaders through such outreaches.
She told Ultimate and GHone News’ Eno Safo, “With the support of the embassy, we do a lot of reaching out into our communities because we know that young women given the opportunity, can perform much more than we can ever imagine,”.
The students who benefitted from the programme told Ultimate News the training would inspire them make better choices in life.
DeBless Owusu a student from Yaa Asantewaa Senior High School, said she would have wished the whole school had the opportunity to benefit from the training.
She admitted, “We are facing the problem of choosing careers and taking our attention from things that would hinder us from achieving our career goals.”
Franklina Amoachyewaa Bonsu, from the Kumasi Wesley Girls SHS said, “I picked valuable lessons about menstrual cycles and pregnancy and I also liked the aspect of entrepreneurship where they taught us that aside our academic fields, we should avail ourselves to other opportunities.”
A student from the host school St.Louis SHS, Freda Adu told Ultimate News she had learnt to share her challenges with trusted counsellors for assistance.
The team from the Ghana, United States Department Alumni Association indicated that it was on its way to the Northern regional capital Tamale with the nationwide outreach.
