The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Lieutenant General Obed Boamah Akwa has assured the military’s readiness to put an end to all forms of illegal mining activities in the country.
“Indeed as I said in Bondase, failure is not an option, we shall put an end to all forms of illegal mining activities,” he said.
He urged members of the taskforce to work as a team and with a selfless nationalist spirit.
“We expect all ranks to use their initiative and professional judgement correctly. I urge you members of the taskforce to go forth with courage and fortitude. Go forth with a clear conscience, because the call for this operation, is the right cause. I urge you to work as a team and with a selfless nationalist spirit. With such an approach to work, I have no reason to doubt the success of this venture,” he advised.
The CDS made these remarks during a ceremony to launch “Operation Vanguard,” – a National Anti-Galamsey Task Force established by the government to enforce the ban on illegal mining on Monday July 31, 2017 at Burma Camp in Accra.
About 400 security personnel will be deployed to stop illegal mining activities in regions such as Ashanti, Eastern and Western.
The move, forms part of the Akufo-Addo’s government to clamp down on galamsey.
The Minister of Defence Dominic Nitiwul also stated that the country is behind the taskforce, warning galamseyers not to dare them.
