The finance minister Ken Ofori Atta has disclosed that the Akufo-Addo’s government will allocate a seed money of GH?219.5million to develop Zongo communities in the country.

The Zongo Development Fund (ZDF), he explained will support the provision of critical infrastructure in education and training; health and sanitation; local businesses and centres of culture.

Majority of the settlers who live in Zongos and slums are mostly from the Northern region.

There are so many Zongos in the country, Kumasi alone can boost of more than a dozen.

Presenting the 2017 budget on the floor of Parliament, the minister indicated that the ZDF will leverage its seed fund to attract additional funding from donors.

‘Mr.Speaker, as part of our efforts to develop Zongo communities, government will set up a Zongo Development Fund (ZDF) with seed money of GH?219.5million. The Fund
will support the provision of critical infrastructure in education and training; health and sanitation; local businesses and centres of culture, as well as improve security in the Zongo
communities. The ZDF is expected to leverage its seed fund to attract additional funding from Development Partners, private sector institutions, civil society organizations, and other non-governmental organizations,’ he explained.

The President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo has explained that the rationale behind the creation of the Inner City and Zongo Development ministry was to ensure that the development of the inner cities and zongos, did not become areas of despair, areas of difficulty and areas of social conflict.
