The Executive Director of Africa Center for International Law and Accountability William Nyarko, has stated that power sharing is out of the equation to settle the pending Gambia impasse.
According to him, power sharing is alien to the Constitution of Gambia adding that it can only happen if the national assembly of Gambia amends the country’s Constitution.
Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has refused to hand over power to Adama Barrow President-elect after he lost the Presidential race some weeks ago.
Mr Nyarko observed that Mr Jammeh who has ruled for 22 years is refusing to relinquish power fearing that he would be witch-hunted.
Speaking on Ultimate Breakfast Show hosted by Lantam Papanko, he indicated that Mr Jammeh is not opened to reason.
‘Mr Jammeh is not somebody who is open to reason, making outrageous comments. As you know when you have problems, you look at the variety of options you have, in the first place power sharing is out, because it is alien to the Constitution of the Gambia. The Constitution of Gambia does not provide for power sharing, so that should be out, it has no place. To have power sharing means that the national assembly will have to amend the Constitution. The power sharing should be discarded. It is not something that they should go for. I think that Mr Jammeh wants assurances that he will not be prosecuted,’ he suggested.
He commended ECOWAS leadership for intervening to resolve the issue.
