The Ashanti regional Communications Director of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) Osei Kofi Acquah has described as ‘illegal and bogus’ the call by Police Chief Superintendent Benjamin Agbedzo, for electorate to clear off from polling stations after voting in December polls.
He further described as unconstitutional the comment by the Chief Superintendent warning political parties not to bus their supporters to polling stations.
The Director of Operations of the election taskforce of the Ghana Police has cautioned the various political parties to desist from bussing their supporters to the various polling stations.
But in an interview with Ultimatefmonline.com, Mr Acquah said the Chief Superintendent does not have any mandate to prevent political parties from bussing their supporters to the polling stations.
He wondered how the police service expects persons with disabilities such as the party’s Flagbearer Ivor Greenstreet to exercise their franchise if the political parties refuse to bus them.
The Regional Communications Director of the CPP warned that any intimidating threats by the police to interfere in the electoral process will be resisted arguing that the directive by the police is not enshrined in the constitution.
He questioned why the Chief Superintendent who is not a contender in the race will be acting as National Democratic Congress (NDC) member.
‘The mandate of the police is to uphold laws and orders in the country and laws are regulations and rules enshrined in the Constitution so for a Chief Superintendent to tell electorate to return home after casting their votes, it is illegal, bogus, fraudulent and not enshrined in our constitution, and that policeman has no mandate to say such thing. If CPP decides to bus people who are cripples, blind to cast their votes what is wrong with that.
‘If they try to in one way or the other try to disenfranchise our supporters from voting, we will resist any oppressors rule. If the Policemen want to act as NDC people and try to use bulling, force to curtail us, we will resist it and if this means confrontation with the police, so be it. After casting our votes we will be on stand by and protect ballot boxes and papers. We are going to bus our people who are in one way or the other disabled or don’t have access to the polling stations,’ he warned.
