Some workers at the Rattray Park in Kumasi are protesting over poor remunerations and months of unpaid allowances.
The staff mainly cleaners and gardeners receive a hundred and fifty cedis (GHC150.00) per month as salaries and some allowances amounting to a hundred cedis (GHC100.00) per month.
They however complain they have not received their allowances in the past three months.
The workers also disclosed that they have not received last month’s salary leaving them worse off.
Some of the aggrieved workers who spoke to Ultimate News’ Theresa Oppong on condition of anonymity expressed worry that they are unable to complain as their bosses threaten to lay them off when they speak up.
“We work at the Rattray Park. We receive a hundred and fifty cedis every month and an allowances of hundred cedis. Its November 15, 2016 but they have not paid us our salaries. Our allowances have also been in arrears for the past three months and what hurt is that they don’t respect us” one worker lamented.
“Our salaries are meagre. How can you take just a hundred and fifty in these hard times in Ghana and expect to survive? But for lack of jobs, we would have stopped this work. To make things worse, the salaries don’t even come on time. I blame our manager and secretary for failing to champion our course,” another worker recounted.
“When we are unable to come to work they deduct ten cedis from our allowances. We cannot complain because they will threaten to lay us off. They should pay us our allowances in arrears. We can only come to work if we have money for transport,” a young man fumed.
Ultimate News’ Theresa Oppong gathers that there is currently simmering tensions which could lead to a full blown demonstration if the salaries and allowances are not released with dispatch.
Speaking with the Manager of the Park, Mr Kwame Asamoah, he explained that they do not owe any of their workers any salaries.
‘We don’t owe anybody salaries, this issue keeps coming up,’ he denied.
