The leadership of the country’s two largest political parties- the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) are at each other’s throats over who is actually responsible for the violence that broke out at the Nima residence of the NPP flagbearer Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo.
There was sporadic shooting amidst pelting of stones as supporters of the two major political parties clashed Sunday morning infront of the Nima residence of NPP flagbearer.
Whereas the NPP is blaming the NDC for using its sponsored health walk to trigger the whole violence on arrival at the scene, the NDC indicate that the bodyguards of the presidential nominee started it all by firing into the unprovoked crowd.
A statement issued by NPP’s Director of Communications Nana Akomea which condemned the act stated that Godwin Ako Gunn, one of the radio panelists freed by President John Mahama in the recent Montie trio led the attack.
“Early this morning, a large crowd of NDC supporters led by one Ako Gunn, one of the Muntie 3 who was recently pardoned by President Mahama after being jailed for threatening to rape and murder the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, massed up in front of the home of Nana Addo, and violently attacked the security detail outside the presidential candidate’s house. We thank the police for their speedy and invaluable intervention.
The motive for this act is not in doubt. The NDC was clearly there for one reason and one reason only: to assault NPP supporters and create an environment of fear within Ghana 24 days to the election”.
But Deputy General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho has refuted the claims adding that it was the NPP supporters that rather attacked the NDC first. “Yes there was some small mishap at the Nima police station area but check the records, who were the ones holding the guns, was it us or Akufo-Addo’s hoodlums. Nobody in our group wielded a gun. It was Akufo-Addo hoodlums that wielded guns so go to them and ask them why their wielded guns when there was no provocation,” he said.
He added that, “There was no exchange of gun shots; it was the NPP guys who fired.
